The five modifiers are based on the Fitzpatrick scale, a dermatological classification system developed by Thomas B. Fitzpatrick in 1975. The scale categorises human skin into six types based on how they respond to ultraviolet light:

  • Type 1-2 (Light): Pale skin that burns easily. Modifier: U+1F3FB.
  • Type 3 (Medium-Light): Fair skin that tans gradually. Modifier: U+1F3FC.
  • Type 4 (Medium): Olive or light brown skin. Modifier: U+1F3FD.
  • Type 5 (Medium-Dark): Brown skin. Modifier: U+1F3FE.
  • Type 6 (Dark): Dark brown to black skin. Modifier: U+1F3FF.

How Skin Tone Modifiers Work in Unicode

Technically, skin tone modifiers are combining characters. When you select a skin-toned emoji, your device is actually combining two code points: the base emoji (for example, U+1F44B for Waving Hand) and the skin tone modifier (for example, U+1F3FD for medium skin). The resulting sequence is U+1F44B U+1F3FD, which renders as a single emoji with medium skin tone.

This combining approach means that adding skin tone support did not require thousands of new code points. Instead, five modifier characters could be combined with any existing human emoji, instantly multiplying the emoji set. Today, every human emoji in the People and Body category supports all five skin tones plus the default yellow.

The Impact on Representation

The introduction of skin tone modifiers was not just a technical change — it was a cultural shift. Research by the Unicode Consortium and independent scholars found that users who could select their own skin tone reported feeling more represented in digital communication. A 2018 study published in the journal Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction found that people who use skin-toned emojis report higher levels of satisfaction with digital self-expression.

However, the feature also sparked important conversations. Some users choose the default yellow tone deliberately, viewing it as a statement about universality. Couple and Group Emojis: Mixed Skin Tones

In 2018, Unicode went further by introducing mixed-skin-tone couple emojis. Using Zero Width Joiner (ZWJ) sequences, the standard can now represent two people with different skin tones holding hands, kissing, or in a couple. For example, a person with light skin and a person with dark skin holding hands is encoded as a sequence combining both base characters, both skin tone modifiers, and ZWJ characters between them. This exponentially expanded the representation possible in the emoji set.
